NAPLES:
I was working backwards and didn't have time to check Goethe. Again,
Goethe didn't cite a classical source, such as Pliny the Younger--nor any
source.
"See Naples and Die" was probably coined about 1762, when Pompeii was
rediscovered and Naples was made a stop on the "Grand Tour."
I thought someone in, well, Naples would have solved this, but I guess
not. I won't be able to solve it for at least several more weeks.
