seems to me that the figurative uses of 'break' as 'chance/opportunity' all

carry the idea of sudden positive change in circumstances. For example,

"Gimme a break" , especially if preceded by "Aw, come on" might mean "Do me

a favor (for once in your life, you habitually mean so-and-so)."
