Subject: Re: Banning words in class

In my Intro to Sociolinguistics class Winter 1998 quarter, a couple of the
students who are TAs for the intro composition class said they tried to
ban the filler "like" in speech but had to give up the ban because
students found they couldn't construct a thought without using it.
Apparently the students just decided not to talk during class because the
task of censoring their words was too much for them to overcome--or
adjust. --SL
