<br>        Sorry this is so late.  But I've heard that the Scottish National
<br>Dictionary is going to be put on CD-ROM shortly with etymologies et al.
<br>(as soon as the bugs are worked out).  That might not be too helpful for
<br>most of American English, but for the midlands it might come in handy.
