As I recall, it started as a standard broadsheet ballad about a condemned

man repenting his sins. Something like:



My name it is Jack Hall,

Chimney sweep.

....

My name it is Jack Hall,

And my neck will pay for all...



Sam Hall is a parody.  There's a bawdier version, under the title

"Knobby Hall" in either Rugby Songs or More Rugby Songs (published by the

British paperback company Sphere.)
