I continue to be delighted by folk etymologies, but, as with 'case quarter'

(-dime, -nickel), there is case knife on p. 553 of Vol. 1 of DARE (in both

senses, i.e., table knife and folding knife - etymologies, distributions,

everything you want to know.)Have some people failed to buy DARE? The biggest

big book bargain of the century (and probably the next)?
