Subject: Re: case knife

My parents used the term--mainly my father--for the blunt, pretty much

useless knives that came with the flatware. I always figured that the name

had to do with the fact that the knives came in a case or chest with the

other utensils. He grew up in Weimar, Texas, a settlement of Czechs and

Germans. His paternal grandmother's people were Germans. He used case

knives as screwdrivers, chisels, and hot irons for melting plastic

together. Consequently, our case knives always had peculiar bends, twists,

and burns in the points.
