Subject: Textual Dialect & Literacy

Howdy (all?) y'all!

I have two quick (but not especially easy) questions:

1) Does anyone know of work that attempts dialectological study on

the basis of textual evidence alone. (I.e. phonology is completely

ignored, and preferably syntactical difference is privileged over

word choice.)

2) Does anyone know of work relating literacy to dialect. I am asking

about literary competence in the home spoken dialect (English or

non-English) in the U.S.

Thanks for your attention.
