I think perhaps you're looking for the second edition

of Elaine Chaika's _Language: The Social Mirror_(Newbury House Publishers,

1989). ISBN 0-06-632613-3. There may even be a third edition by now. I've

never used thee book as a text, but I have enjoyed reading it and have

learned a lot from it.
