Burling's ENGLISH IN BLACK AND WHITE, published I beleive about 20 years ago by I bellieve Holt. the last time I used it it was still in print. A name to check is Walt Wolfram, who has published a lot in this field. You might also want to call the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, and talk to Donna Christian.
