some friends of mine...
I often used the phrase "friends of mine" until an erudite friend
explained that "of mine" made the phrase redundant.

Not to jump to me own defense, but...
It seems to me that the phrase "a friend" has a
different purpose from that of "a friend of mine"
(as with "some friends (of mine)").
The inclusion of the phrase "of mine" seems to
add a dimension of colloquialism and informality.
But that doesn't entirely sum it up.
Anyone following my thinking on this one?
