Why not just look it up in a dictionary?



It was not in my class set of dictionaries. Not having a clue of

what it meant, I thought it was more specialized. I could have

driven a few miles to the closest OED, but am glad that I didn't.

These responses were very interesting. After the first few

responses, I thought I had a good understanding of the plant. Now,

from all of the responses that followed, we all know quite a bit

more. I found it particularly interesting how the same word meant

such different things to different people. Such is language!



Thank you all for your responses. I have printed all of them for my

student who brought me the question. He too was very impressed with

your answers.
