For what it's worth, I wonder if B. B.'s citation of "dutch roll" as synonymous
with "detroit roll," etc. for a sham stake is altogether so. Consider the
following "dutch" items: courage, treat ("go dutch"), uncle (and maybe even
oven) where the adjective can be roughly glossed 'ersatz,' 'pseudo.'
I was unaware of this polysemy until I came across it in the Dutch character's
monologue in Mary McCarthy's novel, "Cannibals and Missionaries."
