The version I heard of the origin of 'gringo' is Robert Burns' "Green Grow

the Rashes,"

the dirty version, which Irish-americans in the U.S. Army during the Mexican

war liked

to sing. It is certainly the type of song we would have sung during my

military days, had any of us been literate enough to know it.
