I am sending this cite along to the list only because it seems to be

one of the earliest. It was collected by Peter Tamony.



"In those sections of the South where the old traditions of gentle

birth and culture still assert their ancient authority and draw the

lines of social demarcation, there is commonly in use a vivid, brutal

phrase to describe ostentatious display by the merely vulgar wealthy.

The phrase is 'nigger rich.'"
