does anyone have any informal observations

about the use of "zero" vs. "o" in reading

series of numbers?

I've always felt that "oh" is the commonly used pronunciation, but "zero" is

used when someone wants to be absolutely explicitly clear about the number.

This came up in a conversation in Japan, because "maru" (lit. "circle") is

used in generaly conversation, but "zero" (zeh-roh) is used when someone

wants to be very precise. It seems interesting how close usage can be.
