Marla,
In NW NC, I grew up with the word "toboggan" meaning knit cap. Have no
idea where it comes from.

It was very confusing to hear the woman say, "I've lost my toboggan, I must
have knocked it off in the car!" Since there was no snow and no hill, I was
really confused so I asked her what she was talking about and she said she had
lost her hat! It was a knit ski hat. Many people in southwestern Arkansas referto these snow hats as toboggans. Has anyone else heard this name for a knit
cap? marla
