I am more familiar with Linda Rondstat's version of this song, in which the

last line is sung as "in his younger days."



As for the third line, what I hear (at least with Ms. Rondstat) is "I guess

it's 'cause he-uz just as wild," "he-uz" being a western contraction for

"he was." The "u" should probably be a schwa, actually.
