Bethany: On the "One of the fictions that has/have..." question, I personally come down on the side of "have" (this is one we discuss a lot in the journalism department). It seems to me that "fictions" is the subject of that verb, not "One" (which has its own verb later on--I've forgotten what it is, but may be "is"?). I read it in the sense of "One of all those fictions that have been put forth over all those centuries (or whatever)..." But, as I said, this is one of those questions that always sparks heated debate in the journalism department here (and elsewhere, I suspect).
