  Duane, there's nothing at all wrong with "They all apply their own
  standards." The issue in my example was the lack of agreement between
  the singular "his or her" and an antecedent "they." I have no problem
  (in spoken usage) with the contemporary singular "everyone" followed by
  plural "they/their"; the example I cited earlier starts with generic
  "they" (perfectly fine) and then inexplicably switches to singular when
  your own "their" would be logical and problem-free.
