This usage is very common in my area--North Central Indiana. I've seen
"mangoes" listed as an ingredient in pizza restaurants. My grocery store
often advertises "home grown mangoes" in the late summer. Needless to say,
this usage confuses my college students from other areas. I'm interested to
learn that you hear this in Illinois as I've never heard it outside my own
area.
