If you look at old, really old, grammar books, you'll see rules saying

that the proper past perfect subjunctive is

"If I had been more careful, ... I wouldn't have muddied the waters..."



Really old? I use that form most commonly (of all forms in question).

I'm rather young. :-)

Though I suppose the _grammar books_ that were used

for my instruction could be considered really old.
