In my high school in northern Minnesota in the late 50s, a common variant of

this expression (which I don't think has surfaced so far in this discussion)

among a certain lowlife subgroup of my classmates was "BITE THE BAG."

It was pretty commonly understand that "bag" referred to scrotum.
