I recall the term growing up in the '50s being used by then elderly people.
I also remember "parking field" rather than "parking lot". In earlier days,
when cars were not plentiful, there was no need in my small town for a paved
area for regular use as a car park. But occasional events such as the fair or
an auction drew crowds from miles around and a nearby field was pressed into
service just for the day and then returned to the cows. By the 50's when we
had actual municipal parking lots, the old timers still called them parking
fields.
