As long as e-mail was only used by a few folks, as a more or less private

communication, there was little concern re: standards, appropriateness, etc.

This concerns you observe stem, I feel, from a growing awareness that e-mail

is now used for more formal and official communications. As it replaces

snail mail or as it becomes the permanent document of record, these concerns

will increase.
