The practically-venerable Chambers and Trudgill is not meant to survey

US dialects, and doesn't. But it has several other excellent and

still-unsurpassed qualities, I think. One is its very clear writing

which informs without condescending-- challenging for undergrads,

perhaps, but not too much. I'd only use several chapters, but you

might want to consider it.

I've been waiting for Walt (and Natalie Schilling-Estes) to revise the

1991 book so we can all use it again! but I guess it won't be this

year...
