I find it striking that in all the press coverage so far--

which, in addition to what Dennis mentioned, includes a

piece on the Today show last Monday--hardly anyone had

mentioned the fact that _all_ the major college dictionaries

include "nigger," with virtually identical treatment. (I

think the Wash. Post writer alluded to this.) We haven't

gotten any additional mail or calls about the issue. Not

that I encourage the NAACP's reaction, but why is Merriam

getting singled out?
