The vowel I use in "wife's" is a diphthong, similar to but slightly
shorter than the sound (which is what I think is meant by your notation
a:I) I use in "wise" or "eyes"). (Note that this is what I'm getting
by pronouncing the words singly, not as part of normal conversation.)
