I think what is happening here (if you'll pardon my amateur attempt) is

that mix = mixed.

The "x" and the "ed" have collided and the "x" has become the dominant

sound.



I think this could probably be called a rule. I don't think I ever hear (or

say) iced before a consonant: ice tea, ice cafe latte, etc., and the

spelling is disappearing quickly.
