Subject: how much of a village?

This is a little off the line of this discussion group, but, in connection

with something I am trying to write, a couple of questions arose in my head

about the title of Hillary Clinton's book, "It Takes A Village," to wit:

1. Is the original saying from which the title comes "It takes a

village to raise a child" or "It takes a whole village to raise a child"?

2. I know the saying is always characterized as an African saying, but

does anyone know anything more specifically about its origin,

geographically, sociologically, and/or etymologically?

Thanks.
