The Appalachian connection is consistent with my own experience. I am the son

of parents born in Southern Kentucky who moved north for work during the early

days of the Depression. Growing up in southwestern Ohio, where many others

like my parents relocated, "katie bar the door" was an expression I heard

with some frequency during my childhood.
